I am pleased to review this amazing book by Kyle Warren. It is a huge task to pull together a range of original bagpipe compositions and arrangements of classic tunes which is masterfully done by Kyle and with slick professional marketing too.
Kyle has such a talent to write amazing tunes that somehow have the feeling that you have known them for years. One of my first experiences of a tune from Kyle’s previous book “Wanted” is the catchy “Golden Brown” Reel which St Andrew’s College Pipe Band has played an arrangement of for a number of years and indeed Folk Band – Dosca. His new book contains a fantastic sequel to this tune “Golden Brown – The 2nd Edition” and I love it!. Other fantastic compositions that has drawn my attention is the “Box Hill Bandit” Hornpipe that I first heard unbelievably played with precision by Steven and David Shedden.
The collection certainly offers something for everyone. The classics in the Arrangements and Originals section include PM John McLellan’s 3/4 March Lochanside, Duncan Johnstone’s Farewell to Nigg arranged into Waltz and Gordon Duncan’s High Drive arranged into Jig which I first heard in Field Marshal Montgomery’s World Championship winning Medley in 2013.
Other pipe bands that have played Kyle’s music over the years include Inveraray and District, Scottish Power, Dysart and Dundonald, Peel Regional Police and the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland to name a few.
I have been exceptionally blessed to have shared a few tunes in the circle with Kyle in his debut Grade 1 season with Strathclyde Police Pipe Band in 2009 and we have remained great friends since. Not only a talented piper but a fantastically talented composer. Pipers and folk musicians alike will be playing Kyle’s music for years to come.
